Our Story: From Print to Digital, The Evolution of She Zine Mag

She Zine Mag was born out of a love for independent publishing, feminist storytelling, and DIY culture. Inspired by stellar publications like Jane Magazine, Venus Zine, Ms., Bust Magazine and others, She Zine originally launched online in 2016 until late 2018. The Zine quickly became recognized as a platform for radical self-expression, feminist thought, and alternative media, with contributors from all over the world. Each month carried a fresh theme and featured a mix of bold commentary, creative writing, interviews, underground art, and the occasional quirky/weird lifestyle piece—staying true to the spirit of zine-making as a tool for activism and community-building.

After several years on hiatus, we are so super proud and excited to reintroduce She Zine Mag as a bigger, bolder, and more accessible than ever. While we still hold true to our DIY, print-inspired roots, we’ve grown into a multi-platform feminist media space, dedicated to:

She Zine Mag remains committed to building a sustainable indie media ecosystem, where voices that are often overlooked in mainstream media have the space to create, disrupt, and reshape the narrative. The world needs safe spaces now more than ever, as so many real world spaces around the world are being dismantled and people are becoming disenfranchised. We, as a publication, are proud to be part of a movement that promotes and facilitates connection and inspires those who need uplifting and a sense of belonging. This inspired our relaunch and we’re so excited to see what we’ll be able to achieve together.

As a proudly Canadian publication, we are committed to supporting local artists, writers, and small businesses while fostering connections with like-minded creatives beyond borders. We believe in strengthening Canada’s independent media landscape, and while our primary focus is on Canadian contributors, we also engage with international freelancers and small businesses whose work aligns with our values.

We believe in the power of truth, creative freedom, and grassroots storytelling to spark change and build a more inclusive, engaged media culture. Whether it’s spotlighting new talent, curating craftivist projects, or exploring the intersection of art, music, and social movements, we embrace the messy, beautiful process of creativity—championing voices that are too often silenced or overlooked.

At She Zine Mag, we believe in the power of human voices — messy, brilliant, and utterly real. We value storytelling that reflects lived experience, original thought, and creative integrity. While AI tools may assist with ideation or research, all submitted work must be crafted by you — not a chatbot.

Our editor uses AI tools to assist with quality control — specifically to flag potential AI-generated submissions (originality.ai), a step in verifying facts (chatgpt.com), and to catch grammar or spelling issues in contributor work (ProwritingAid.com). In some cases, depending on the quality of the draft, AI may also suggest edits to improve tone, style, and readability (ProwritingAid.com). When used, these tools serve as an editorial support system — never a substitute for a human voice.

Any use of AI-generated writing or artwork must be disclosed in advance and is subject to editorial review. We reserve the right to reject or request changes to any submission that doesn’t meet our ethical, aesthetic, or community standards.

AI is here, and it’s not going away. We believe the future will touch all forms of work — including creative work — and that those who don’t approach this shift with curiosity and an open mind risk being left behind. In that spirit, and with full transparency, we’ll be experimenting with AI. We’re not entirely sure what that looks like yet, or even what we’re hoping to achieve — but we’re also not going to ignore what’s on the horizon.

Water, Code, and Accountability

We take the environmental impact of AI seriously. Our publishing work acknowledges the hidden costs of digital tools, particularly the vast amounts of water consumed in training and running large-scale models. To remain accountable, we commit to publishing an annual water-use report that tracks our AI-driven projects and offsets their footprint. Beyond transparency, we actively invest in local water reclamation and conservation projects, ensuring that the resources taken from our ecosystems are returned in meaningful, restorative ways. This dual approach—reporting and reclamation—keeps our creative rebellion aligned with feminist environmental ethics.
